The third installment of [cf2]Say Hola to Spanish[cf1] takes us to the circus and introduces over seventy Spanish words. Although the mixing of both languages can be confusing (Look! La jirafa has a long cuello. How many humps tiene el camello?), the wacky rhymes and the amusing animal scenes will jazz up the Spanish lesson. A pronunciation guide is included at the end of the book. Glos. From HORN BOOK Fall 2000, (c) Copyright 2010. The Horn Book, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Media Source, Inc. Ages 4^-9. The third Say Hola to Spanish title from this author-illustrator team offers another rambunctious, brightly illustrated introduction to the language. Using the same format as the previous books, this one, which is set under the big top, blends Spanish and English words in simple, rhyming couplets filled with silly action. Some of the rhythms are uneven, and the logic of the rhymes is a reach: "A bag is a bolsa, / a basket a cesto / To ask, `What is this?' / you say `Que es esto?'" But the unifying circus theme and hypercolored, animated illustrations will keep kids moving through the bouncy language lesson. An appended glossary offers definitions and pronunciation help for the almost 70 Spanish vocabulary words. Great for read-alouds, this begs to be put to music. Gillian Engberg

K-Gr 3-The "Say Hola" folks do it again, mixing English and Spanish in just the right proportion so readers and listeners can clearly understand the text. This time, the characters go to the circus. "Come to el circo. Bring tu mam ,/and tus hermanos, abuelos, pap ." A pig, lamb, rabbit, and turtle are also attending. In the one-ring circus, children will see payasos (clowns), seals, lions, an octopus playing instruments, and a chicken. These animals might not be in most people's circus experience. Indeed, the author stretches the theme to include explanations for the weather and nature: as the show ends and the spectators leave the tent, they experience a shower and see a rainbow, plants, and a butterfly. The rhyme scheme is occasionally awkward, forcing a few lines and interrupting the flow of the book. Cartoon illustrations in flat golds, reds, purples, and blues have humorous details. Lots of two-page spreads give a sense of the size of the ring and the crowd. Like the earlier titles, this one is useful, but it's not quite as good.-Sally Bates Goodroe, Harris County Public Library, Houston, TX (c) Copyright 2010.
